Who Was Tamara De Lempicka?

Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka was famous for her Art Deco style paintings and self-portraits. Tamara de Lempicka also known as “The Baroness with a Brush,” for her distinctive drawings of chick figure. She was one of those artist who are best known for their distinctive living style rather than their great artwork. Tamara de Lempicka self-portraits greatly express her art deco that is a symbol of famine power and liberation.

Tamara De Lempicka Biography


De Lempicka (birth name Maria Gorska) born into a family of Polish mother and Russian father on May 16, 1898. She belonging to a rich family and introduced with paintings at early age. Tamara De Lempicka was only ten years old when she created first painting of her sister. She completed her early childhood education from a boarding school in Switzerland. She then started living with her grandmother in Italy, where she shown a great interest in the work of iconic Italian painters.

At the age of 15 she fell in love with Tadeusz Lempicki, a dashing lawyer from Russia. Maria and Lempicki’s marriage ceremony held in St Petersburg. Soon after their marriage Lempicki was arrested by new Bolshevik government and remain in jail for a short period.

The couple then decided to move to Paris. These were the days of uncertainty and deprivation but she doesn’t give up. She was self-determined and decide to start a new life and soon be known as Tamara de Lempicka.

The Journey from Maria Gorska to Tamara de Lempicka


In a very short period of time Lempicka proved herself as one of the great artist. She started presenting her work in relatively smaller galleries in France but soon her paintings being shown in the Europe’s most popular galleries. In 1925 Lempicka attended her first exhibition in Milan. She presented a total of 28 pieces that were painted only in a period of 6 months. Lempicka painted one of her most popular self-portrait in 1929 (Tamara in a Green Bugatti) that was featured in Die Dame, the German fashion magazine.

In spite of being married and mother of a young girl, Lempicka was famous for her controversial life style. Mostly she was being seen in the parties of famous personalities like Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, AndrĂ© Gide and Colette. Lempicka was involved in many scandals and had romantic attraction to both male and female. Because of such controversial activities she was divorced in 1928. Later Lempicka was hired to paint the portrait of Baron Raoul Kuffner con Dioszeg’s mistress. During this period she manage to develop relationship with Baron and finally they married in 1934.

During the period of Second World War Tamara with her husband left France and started living in California, United States. She continued her artwork especially abstract painting but during the exhibition of her work in 1962 it wasn’t appreciated much. First time in her life as artist she was thinking seriously to retire from her work as painter.

Tamara De Lempicka died in 1980, she will be remember for ever for her creative art deco style paintings.
